GENERAL ELECTION 2010 COUNT
Now on YouTube, the count and results from Leicester

There was a high turnout at the 2010 General Election in Leicester South. In addition, the share of the vote for Sir Peter Soulsby increased by over 6% The results of the vote are shown below this letter of thanks.
At the election count I said that I believed the vote was a vote of confidence in the work I have done over the past five years - a vote of confidence from the people of Leicester South.

I am a Labour party member but I have also been an independent voice on big issues. It was a lively campaign which looked close at some points. We had plenty of hustings events and debate. I'm particularly pleased with the number of people who have voted Labour in Leicester South.

I would like to thank all in Leicester South for re-electing me as their MP. I will endeavour to repay that support throughout the next Parliament and continue to work hard for all in Leicester South.

Campaigning
"It was a great victory on May 5 and I am incredibly grateful to all of the many who made it possible. Not only were we the only ‘Labour Gain’ in the whole of the UK, but we did it ourselves!

Unlike the by-election, this was our campaign – organised by Leicester South Members with some very good friends from neighbouring constituencies. We shaped our campaign priorities; produced the leaflets; knocked on the doors ourselves – and got the result.

I hope the rest of you, who did so much, will forgive me for some very special thanks to Rose Mooney, who was a brilliant Agent, and to Malcolm Unsworth and Ben Surtees who were working in and out of the office campaigning virtually every day since last November.

Particular thanks too to Ned Newitt, whose layout and design of our leaflets did so much to express our campaign themes effectively.

Our challenge now is to build on the success. Of course, I have got to demonstrate that I can indeed be an effective and independently minded MP to follow Jim Marshall. The office is up and running and I am delighted to have Karey Hunter back there where she belongs."
